I was speaking with a friend about the detrimental effects the fashion industry has on the environment, when she told me that her 21-year-old daughter had stopped buying clothes altogether.
She felt she had enough clothes to last her a lifetime and, when she wanted something new, she would remake it from what she already owned.
This was a turning point, and I wondered who else in the community was doing the same thing. I soon discovered a whole community of individuals, community groups and businesses mending, repairing and upcycling garments.
People were creating and reimagining some wonderful things and telling me their stories about why they were doing it, ranging from environmental concerns to a desire for creative expression to saving money. I felt so impressed and inspired that I decided to create a platform to showcase their wonderful talents.
I believe there is a quiet revolution happening and that we need to make it heard, especially as the noise of fast fashion can easily overshadow the positive narratives often happening right here on our doorstep.
Wandsworth being granted London Borough of Culture for 2025 created the perfect opportunity to bring this event to fruition and inspire a dialogue around sustainable fashion practices.
Going forward, we would like to hold creative workshops for people in our local community to learn basic sewing and repair skills, as well as how creatively to reimagine and upcycle garments and textiles.
